The intensive course on "Qualitative and Quantitative Mixed Research Data Analysis," offered by the Institute of Health Behaviors and Community Sciences at the College of Public Health, National Taiwan University, took place during the first two weeks of the second semester. The course was led by Professor Shu-Yi Hou from the University of Central Florida and engaged in exchanges with more than 20 master's and doctoral students from the fields of public health, nursing, and pharmacy.

This course served as an advanced level study on "Mixed Methods Research," and the enrolled students mostly had well-defined research topics. Apart from reviewing the core elements of mixed methods research, the course emphasized practical skills such as data analysis, research design, and writing and publishing papers. The course was conducted through lectures, literature review, and practical exercises. Students were guided to develop their research objectives, questions, and procedures step by step based on their own research interests and topics. Additionally, the instructor guided the students in coding and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data using the Dedoose software, and employing joint displays to simultaneously present the processes of data collection and analysis for both types of data. At the end of the course, each student conducted a 5-minute mini proposal presentation.

At the conclusion of the four-day intensive course, the instructor invited everyone to gather and share feedback and suggestions. Some students expressed initial concerns about language barriers affecting their learning effectiveness but found that detailed explanations from the instructor and discussions among peers facilitated smooth progress in the course. Initially, some students were concerned about starting their research or lacked confidence in oral presentations, but with encouragement from the instructor and peers, everyone successfully completed their individual presentations and received constructive feedback from each other. Each group consisted of members at different research stages and from different fields but with similar research themes. They shared their experiences and research ideas, leading to lively discussions that sparked many research insights. Some even described the course as uniquely enjoyable yet rich in knowledge.

Professor Shu-Yi Hou plans to organize a writing workshop for MMR part 3 in the future, aiming to assist graduate students at different writing stages in overcoming challenges and difficulties encountered in their research. Further information on the workshop will be announced, and everyone is welcome to stay tuned for updates.
