研討會主旨:

According to Confucius in his Analects, “Rongo” as early as sixth century BC, dying and death are natural processes in human beings. Every transnational caregiving is going through end of life beyond borders across the globe. Global aging has developed transnational caregiving for older adults across the Pacific-Rim. If adult immigrants correspond to older parents’ expectations, (1) they temporarily return to their home countries (i.e., transnational long-distance caregiving) and/or (2) their elderly parents immigrate to their adult children’s countries (i.e., immigration due to caregiving). On the other hand, other immigrants may provide only psychological support and/or financial support for their older parents and may ask their families in their home countries to provide physical and informational support and care for their older parents.

During the increasing number of the COVID-19 patients, the policies and the travel bans/restrictions had been issued in the United States, Mexico, China, Taiwan, Japan, and worldwide. The pandemic, the policies, and the travel bans have given transnational family caregivers challenges and benefits, including (1) Transition in transnational caregiving, (2) Utilization of information and communication technology (ICT), (3) Shortages of transnational professional care workers, (4) Enhancement of health disparities and inequity, (5) Expansion of economic disparities in minorities, and (6) Acceleration of discrimination against Asians and Asian Americans.

Given the significant changes throughout the world, the 2023 Japanese Fiscal Year International Symposium highlights transnational caregiving for older adults and end of life from global perspectives, including North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The International Symposium also sheds light on policy implications of innovation of transnational caregiving for older adults and end of life, in collaboration with ICT (Information and Communication technology), AI (Artificial Intelligence), and robots in the post COVID-19 era.

美國加州大學柏克萊分校網頁介紹國際線上研討會訊息:

This symposium delves into the universal experiences of caregiving and end-of-life, emphasizing the transnational dimension that spans across cultures and continents. Highlighting the complexities of global aging, it explores the dynamics of transnational caregiving where adult immigrants navigate the expectations of their aging parents through long-distance care or by bringing them across borders. Amidst the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, which introduced unprecedented challenges, including travel bans and healthcare disparities, the event seeks to uncover the evolving nature of caregiving. It will feature discussions on the role of technology, the shortage of professional caregivers, and the increase in health and economic disparities, particularly among minorities. With a focus on innovation in caregiving through ICT, AI, and robotics, the symposium aims to forge a path forward in the post-pandemic world, offering insights from North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia on transnational caregiving and end-of-life practices.
